Julie Praises Fairtrade Cardiff

Julie Morgan, MP for Cardiff North, praised Cardiff for its Fairtrade efforts in the House of Commons today and welcomed Fairtrade Fortnight which starts on February 25th and runs until March 9th.

Julie Morgan MP said:

“We can be proud of the fact that Cardiff became the first Fairtrade Capital in 2004 and I support the Fair Trade Cardiff partnership that made this achievement possible. I know that the partnership of shops, cafes and organisations has increased awareness of fairtrade issues and access to fairtrade goods and encouraged people to buy fairtrade whenever possible.

“Over the next two weeks, I hope we all think about what we are buying, whether it’s coffee, tea, chocolate, bananas, cotton – and I would encourage people to ask for fairtrade products and to buy them whenever possible.

“Our shopping habits can make a real difference to the world’s poorest people. Fairtrade helps support 7 million people in the developing world and makes sure that people are paid a fair price for their work, that no child labour is used and that there are safe working conditions.

“I know that with the support of the Welsh Assembly Government, Wales is hoping to become the world’s first Fairtrade country and this would be something to be very proud of.

“I hope that people will take part in some of the celebrations for Fairtrade Fortnight planned in Cardiff. The Fairtrade Bus will visit the Oval Basin in Cardiff Bay on Saturday, March 8th and I hope that we will all get on board in more ways than one.”
