Julie Welcomes Landmark Ruling

Julie Morgan, MP for Cardiff North, has welcomed the landmark ruling by the Law Lords today which will mean that victims of sexual attacks and sexual abuse may be able to sue their attackers many years after being assaulted.

Julie Morgan MP said:

“I enthusiastically welcome the news that someone who has been raped or abused as a child may now have more than six years to bring a claim against an attacker.

“Often, because of the particular trauma of such crimes, victims are reluctant to some forward for many years and up until now, have suffered because of this.

“They been unable to sue their attackers if the attack was more than six years ago or, in child abuse cases, more than six years after someone turned 18.

“I am very glad that the Law Lords have reversed the ruling of the High Court and the Appeal Court in the so-called Lotto rapist case and that the case will now be going back to the High Court and that hopefully, the victim of this man will receive more compensation.

“For victims of such terrible crimes, justice should be possible even many years after the event. Time can never completely heal such wounds, but seeing justice being served can certainly help.”
