SCHOOL REORGANISATION IN CARDIFF NORTH
December 2009 Update
There has been a lot of concern about the proposal for school reorganisation in Cardiff North – this has caused a lot of upset and worry.
I wanted to let you know my views about the plans.
For my part, I feel that none of the proposals put forward by the LEA are workable for the following reasons:
· The three primary schools in question – two English language and one Welsh language – are thriving and successful schools.
· As I read it, there are too many children on the books to justify the merger of the two English primary schools as a two form entry primary school.
· There will also be an anticipated rise in the birth rate in the future, so any
restriction in numbers now may be very short-
· I am also concerned about the loss of any education land to development, land which will never be recovered for the benefit of pupils.
However, I know that something needs to be done about the school buildings, especially at Eglwys Wen/Melin Gruffydd site because of the large number of portacabins.
I will be writing to the LEA by December 18th to let them know what I think, but I would very much welcome your views before then. I want to do all that I can to support the parents, guardians, staff, governors and children affected.

March 2010 Update
The LEA came forward with a Fourth Option for school reorganisation and there were
some positive things about this. For example, there was no sale of school land proposed,
less and slower reduction in Whitchurch High School numbers and recognition that
Eglwys Wen and Eglwys Newydd were more than a two-
But – the same issue remains. Why put together two thriving popular schools if there is enough money to manage without selling land? Why couldn’t the present arrangement stay?
I sent my views to the LEA by the March deadline.
