SUNBEDS (REGULATION) BILL

APRIL 8th 2010: Success! The Bill got through the House of Lords and is now the Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010!! Click here to see it.

HISTORY:

In November 2009, I was lucky enough to be drawn 5th in the Private Members’ Bills Ballot. After careful consideration, I chose to present a Bill to regulate the use of sunbeds. I have been working on the Bill with Siân James, MP for Swansea East, who has campaigned tirelessly on this issue.

The full details of the Bill can be found here. (You can follow its progress and can click READ THIS BILL to see the full text).

The Bill aims to prevent under-18s from using sunbeds – it has been shown that sunbed use, particularly under the age of 35, significantly increases the risk of developing skin cancer in later life. In Wales, 8% of 11-17 year-olds have used sunbeds and in England, 6% – in England, that’s more than 250,000 children and in Wales, more than 55,000.

The Bill has both cross-party and Government support.

On January 13th, I launched the Bill at a reception in the House of Commons and we were lucky enough to be joined by Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham MP, Gillian Merron MP, and by Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud  – you can see me pictured with them above. Cancer Research UK organised the launch and have worked extensively on the issue.

On January 27th, we presented a petition of over 10,000 signatures to Gillian Merron MP, the Minister for Public Health, at 10 Downing Street. The Save Your Skin petition was backed by The Sun, which has also campaigned on this issue.

On January 29th, my Bill had its Second Reading in the House of Commons.

You can read my speech and the full debate here.

On the morning of the Second Reading, Danielle Lineker came along to a breakfast to back the Bill at the House of Commons. She’s from Cardiff and so it was great to get some local support.

I’m pleased to say that the Bill got through and will now go to Committee. I hope very much that we will have enough time to get it passed and for it to become law.

On February 10th, the Bill got through its Committee Stage.  Now we’re onto the Report Stage and the Third Reading.

You can read the committee discussion here.

On March 10th, supporters of the Teenage Cancer Trust came to the House of Commons to support the Bill – they put on fake sun burn to emphasise the damaging effects of sunbeds on young skin. They’re pictured below with Siân James MP, Gillian Merron MP and myself. Heat magazine backed the event.

On March 12th, the Bill got through its Report Stage and Third Reading – just. I was very grateful for the support of MPs who stayed behind on a second Friday to support the Bill (usually MPs work in their constituencies on a Friday).

You can read the debate here.

The Bill is now in the House of Lords – it will get its Second Reading on March 30th.
